Microneedling 101

Microneedling involves using a handheld, pen-like device to create microscopic channels or controlled micro-injuries within the treatment site(s). These injuries are made with several tiny, ultra-thin needles attached to the device.

For starters, microneedling is very well-tolerated. These “wounds” or injuries are not damaging to the skin; they are therapeutic when in the hands of our highly qualified and skilled professionals. That’s because making tiny openings in the skin with these microneedles stimulates the natural repair of various skin issues, including wrinkles and enlarged pores. As the skin heals, collagen is produced to close those openings. More collagen is associated with tighter, smoother skin and a more youthful appearance as the supply of this elastic fiber declines as we age. Collagen can also be eroded due to environmental damage.

This technology sets itself apart from other microneedling options because it is the first to receive FDA clearance for treating facial acne scars in adults 22 years and older. Some therapies are not indicated for certain skin types. For instance, some laser technologies may not be appropriate for patients with darker complexions. However, since microneedling does not deliver heat, individuals across the spectrum of skin types can benefit. The risk of complications, such as worsening pigment changes associated with a post-inflammatory response in darker skin following laser therapy, is avoided. Microneedling treats pigment problems like melasma and doesn’t make them worse!
